Vegetarian for Life chef Ollie discusses cookery equipment and methods to keep on cooking into later life.

Picture this: you walk into your kitchen with a favourite recipe in mind. A comforting stew, a quick curry, something familiar. You reach for the chopping board… but your grip isn’t quite what it used to be. Or you bend down to get a pan from the bottom cupboard, only to be met with a sharp twinge in your back.

Now imagine that happening every time you cook.

For many people living with disabilities or long-term health conditions, these challenges aren’t small inconveniences. They’re daily barriers. And when those barriers stack up, something as everyday as making a hot meal can begin to feel out of reach.

Maybe someone in your care would benefit from being able to cook again. Ollie discusses on our companion site how to empower older vegans and vegetarians who may experience barriers to cooking. This includes using handy adaptations of cookery utensils. Ollie also discusses how to adapt ingredients and cookery methods to suit each individual's ability.

Re-imagining the kitchen for everyone

Community initiatives are also empowering to older veggies. Read our directory of veggie meal delivery services, Veggie Meals to Your Door.

Cooking with disability isn’t about giving up. It’s about adapting, re-imagining, and rediscovering joy in whatever way works for you or the person you care for.

As a society, we can help by:

• advocating for accessible kitchen tools through health and social care

• supporting community meal-sharing and delivery initiatives

• designing kitchens both at home and in care settings, with true universal access in mind

When we do this, we create a world where no one has to choose between nourishment and independence. Because when cooking becomes accessible, we’re not just putting food on the table, we’re serving up dignity, connection, and possibility for everyone.
